EVENT DESCRIPTION:
Becky Schimpff will walk students through how to forge not just one but TWO types of square corners! Square corners can be challenging to forge, Becky will give you all the tips and tricks you need to prevent it from being an “upsetting” experience! She will give clear instruction on how to forge corners successfully and spend time looking at what can go wrong and how to prevent/ fix problems.
At this point in the classes, students will have learned to forge all the elements they need to put together their own Level II Grille. But wait… you don’t have all the information you need yet!
Victoria Ritter will get you to the next step. First, Victoria will show you the technique of transferring your drawing onto a steel plate. This is essential for working with hot steel. Then she will walk you through techniques for figuring out the length of starting stock you need for the frame and scrolls.
Frank Anninghofer will take over with assembling the Level II grille. He’ll talk us through getting the frame to dimension and how to rivet the pieces together. He’ll explain how to forge the scrolls to dimension and get them to fit both the drawing and into the frame. Frank will talk about tricks to get things to fit and what to do when things seem to be going awry such as when your pieces have a tilt, a twist, or a bend.
At the end of this session, you’ll have all the knowledge you need to complete your own Level II grille.
Presentation fulfils the CBA level IIa curriculum requirements.
