LEVEL II SKILLS: C- and S-Scrolls

A fundamental element in decorative iron is the forged-to-fit C-scroll or S-scroll.  Whole cathedral screens have been made with little else!  Learn the keys to forging symmetrical double-ended scrolls that will actually match your plans.

EXPERIENCE LEVEL:  Open to all levels but geared to smiths growing solid intermediate skills (Level I graduate or equivalent).

EVENT DESCRIPTION:

This webinar will try to cover all the bases for successfully forging C- and S- scrolls to measure.  This is a key skill for decorative ironwork of all kinds, including the CBA Level II grille!  

Topics covered include pattern transfer, determining starting lengths, producing consistent scrolls, and adjusting scrolls to fit.  We’ll also have a look at scrolling jigs (or forms), covering both some tricks to forging a good one, and how to use one properly and efficiently.

You’ll get more out of the class if you’ve practiced hand-turning decent scrolls of various kinds and have forged one or two scrolling wrenches and a pair of scrolling tongs.

Participants will be emailed handouts and a list of suggested tools.
