Many of us are missing our CBA family and friends. Not sure just when we will be able to share and learn from our fellow smiths in person so in the mean time will be hosting a series of informal round table Presentations and Chats using zoom.
“Let’s talk Design” is a series of photo presentations with discussion about design to be held one week apart (4 total). Join our raw and real conversation with three accomplished blacksmiths: Lynda Metcalfe, Victoria Patti and Ellen Durkan. Each smith will go over their process as they take a piece from an idea to a finished design for a piece of metal art. Each session will conclude with question and answer time giving each participant a chance to chat with the smiths. These three informal presentations will be followed by a final bonus session where all three come back and form a panel discussion combining their shared knowledge.
Victoria Patti is a metal artist living in Colorado. She has combined blacksmithing techniques with other metal working skills to primarily make public art pieces. As a CBA member for 5 years, she has attended a few CBA conferences and travelled to Argentina to teach blacksmithing skills. Working and designing with metal has been in her wheelhouse for a little over 20 years. Victoria was also the host of the Blacksmither Radio podcast.
Lynda Metcalfe: Lynda Metcalfe is a blacksmith and metal artist. Her work has ranged from architectural ironwork to jewelry. She makes self-generated ironwork projects, commissions and a couple of production items as they engage different approaches to design and making, and the different ways of working feed each other. Lynda started smithing in the early 90's, working for an architectural smith in England after graduating from a Design/Metals undergrad program. Her shop is in Brasstown, western NC.
Ellen Durkan is an artist blacksmith who lives in Delaware and teaches at a local college. Herbusiness is Iron Maiden Forge where she creates "forged fashion" wearable art. She travelsand teaches blacksmith classes during the summer when the apocalypseisn'tbringingdown the universe. She acceptsofferings in the form of wine, chocolate or tools Ellen will gladly discuss her process and other various interests that led to her current body of work; fashion meets forging.
