DESCRIPTION:  

This is a two-day workshop led by San Diego based visiting artist-blacksmith Pat Downing. In this jam-packed and fun hands-on class, Pat will first teach foldforming, a process of transforming flat sheets of metal into three dimensional sculpture, and then how to use both grown and commercial patinas and combinations of patinas to create spectacular finishes on these foldformed pieces. 

Pat is known for large scale sculptures using exactly the same techniques that he will be teaching in this class, you can see examples of Pat's work on his website here: http://www.patdowning.com/ 

On the first day, Pat will demonstrate how to create traditional “grown” patinas, then show students varied techniques in foldforming before letting students loose to try their hand at making their own pieces. The second day will start with more foldforming and then Pat will return to patina methods. Students will spend the afternoon experimenting with these different patina methods. Last, we'll see how the "grown" patinas have developed! 

We’ll be using mainly copper for both parts of the class but all of the techniques may be applied to steel as well. Once you learn the basic techniques, you'll find the possible applications are endless!

This is a two day workshop scheduled for June 29-30. The workshop will run from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm each day, and has no pre-requisite to attend.
