DESCRIPTION
Rachel David is an blacksmith from New Orleans, LA. Her work focuses on accentuating the sculptural aspects of potentially mundane items including furniture and architectural elements and public art. Ben Beames ins a blacksmith from Tasmania who does industrial and sculptural forging.
This class focuses on sculptural joinery and effects, and within that umbrella, of course the tools needed to make those joints and effects. This will lead students to an open minded approach not only to joinery but to tool making and with that the inherent empowerment of being able to fashion ones own tools.
Our intentions will focus on the approach to making tools to fit a potentially abstract shaped situation. Not a hammer and round punch situation... These are always important but we'll be talking about how to figure out bolsters and matrixes for different applications. What shaped blob would make what shaped indent and how that would distort pleasingly.
